Frida.

It’s hard to wander around San Francisco without running into the image of Frida Kahlo. You’ll find her intense eyes and iconic eyebrows on t-shirts, in shop windows and in murals. There’s even a brand of tequila that features her portrait on every bottle. While you certainly know her face, her name, and hopefully her art … you might not know much about the time she spent in the Bay Area with her husband, Diego Rivera.

In this story, we aimed to give listeners a sense of what Frida’s life was like when she lived in San Francisco, which she called “the city of the world.” We hired a voice actress to read from letters Frida wrote. Reporter Marisol Medina-Cadena was a finalist for an NAHJ Ñ Award for this story. Listen below or read the web story.
